Live Theater – One Parent's Rosebriar Experience
Let me say up front that my daughter Brigid would prefer to have her foot nailed to the floor and spin around in circles rather than draw attention to herself in public. Not only that, she is athletic and loves the outdoors, especially on a warm, sunny Sunday afternoon. I tell you this so that you will understand the remarkable occurrence at a Rosebriar performance a few weeks ago. . .
It was an unseasonably warm spring day, a Sunday. We returned home from church, and I set about recruiting “volunteers” to attend Rosebriar's Chekov performance with me. “A play? By a Russian - that's dead?!” They were thoroughly suspicious. Then the whining began, “But it's so nice out! Do we have to go?” After some clever cajoling, 15-year old Will and 12-year old Brigid finally agreed to accompany me for a few hours of “quality time”. We entered the Groveport Town Hall and took our seats, my two volunteers resigned to the fact that the next 1 ½ hours just had to be endured (for Mom's sake.)
As the two short plays unfolded, my son Will began to giggle, and I could see that he was focused and engaged. During “A Marriage Proposal”, I became aware of a hearty laugh from someone on my left. It was Brigid! She was practically out of control with laughter and seemed to be thoroughly enjoying herself. She was exchanging glances with the older gentleman next to her, a stranger no less; and they seemed to be the best of friends.
On the short trip home, Brigid was unusually talkative and kept repeating lines from the newly discovered farce – embellished with that same gleeful laugh I had heard in the theater. “I didn't understand it all, but maybe we can go back sometime,” she stated simply. “It's a lot like those old I Love Lucy episodes - only better in person.”
As soon as we arrived home, Will grabbed a notebook and pen. “I have an idea for a play, Mom. See you later.” He went outside, sat under a tree, and began creating a fantastical script about – well I don't know yet. No video games, no TV, no iPod plugged in. He was plugged in to a different world.
That is the value of live theater: We connect with each other, become something new, and reveal our hidden creativity. It is a gift, and once opened it provides a new perspective for us and for our children. We use a different part of our brain that allows us to imagine what it's like to be someone else, somewhere else. It has transformative power.
The staff and players of Rosebriar invite you to discover the fun of live theater, especially Shakespeare. A Midsummer Night's Dream is coming at the end of July, so get ready to... liberate your laughter!
